Bengaluru, Apr 3: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has uncovered Kannada actress Ranya Rao’s involvement in hawala transactions in collaboration with the third accused in a gold smuggling case.

In its remand application submitted to the Special Court for Economic Offences regarding the arrest of jeweler Sahil Sakaria Jain, the DRI detailed how he and Ranya Rao were part of a hawala network.

Investigations have revealed that with Sahil’s assistance, Ranya Rao allegedly disposed of 49.6 kilograms of gold and transferred Rs 38.4 crore through hawala to Dubai.

“Sahil, a native of Ballari settled in Bengaluru, aided Ranya Rao in selling 49.6 kilograms of gold worth around Rs 40 crore and transferring hawala money amounting to Rs 38.4 crore to Dubai,” the DRI stated.

Sahil has reportedly confessed to facilitating a transfer of Rs 1.7 crore to Ranya Rao in Bengaluru and admitted to earning Rs 55,000 per transaction.

The DRI also noted that Rs 2.7 crore in unaccounted cash, seized from Ranya Rao’s residence following her arrest on March 4, is likely hawala money generated as profit from purchasing gold in Dubai and selling it in Bengaluru.

According to the DRI’s findings:

  • In November 2024, Sahil assisted Ranya in selling 8.9 kilograms of gold worth Rs 6.8 crore and transferring Rs 6.5 crore through hawala to Dubai. He also handed over Rs 32 lakh to her.
  • In December 2024, he helped her sell 12.6 kilograms of gold worth Rs 9.9 crore and transferred Rs 9.6 crore to Dubai on her behalf.
  • In January, Sahil facilitated the disposal of 14.5 kilograms of gold valued at Rs 11.5 crore and assisted in transferring Rs 11 crore.
  • In February, he sold 13.4 kilograms of gold worth Rs 11.8 crore and arranged a hawala transfer of Rs 11.2 crore to Dubai while handing over Rs 55 lakh to Ranya in Bengaluru.

Sahil was arrested on March 26 and is currently in judicial custody.

Ranya Rao, the stepdaughter of senior police officer Ramchandra Rao, was arrested on March 3 for allegedly smuggling 14.2 kilograms of gold worth over Rs 12.56 crore.

The case is under investigation by the DRI, the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Meanwhile, the state government has formed a special team, led by a senior IAS officer, to probe the role of DGP Ramachandra Rao. A report on the matter has been submitted to the government, sources said.
