Mangalore, Mar 18: A galaxy of dignitaries adorned the dais on Friday March 17 evening on St Joseph Engineering College ground on the occasion of its third College Day.
Presiding over the function, college president Bishop Aloysius D'Souza of Mangalore appreciated the director, assistant director, and the principal and staff of the college for their dedication, parents for their sacrifices for the sake of and support to their children's education and future and the administration for efficient running of the institution.
He observed that the institution had registered considerable growth on all fronts which could not be explained in a natural way. The mission of the college was to provide the students with quality technical education and education with human values, and in this direction, the teaching staff had been exhibiting great commitment to their profession, he added.
Although the college was a Christian minority institution, its doors were open to all communities without discrimination, he reminded. The combined efforts of everyone involved had turned it into a premier institution, he concluded.
Ryan International Group of Schools director Grace Pinto was the chief guest while Queen of Apostles congregation's provincial superior Sr Maria Goretti and Leo Rodrigues, well-known Mangalorean NRI entrepreneur and managing director of Al Mazroui and Clevy Auto Services, Admiral Auto Parts Trading Co and Texas-Rent-A-Car in Abu Dhabi were guests of honour on the occasion. Prominent persons who attended the college day included Mumbai's leading entrepreneur and managing director of Printania Offset Albert V D'Souza, who was also instrumental in the founding of the college, and James Mendonca, a well-known Mangalorean NRI entrepreneur and president of Mangalore Konkans, Dubai.
The function began with an inspirational invocation by the college's student choir. College director Fr Valerian D'Souza welcomed the gathering. Principal Dr R K Yaji read an impressive annual college report detailing the achievements, improvements and laurels earned by the students and also staff inside the college and elsewhere.
Leo Rodrigues distributed prizes for excellence in extra-curricular activities and delivered a valuable message to the students as to how vital hard work and dedication was in attaining success. He quoted his own example of having moved over to the Middle East in search of a job over two decades ago. He further explained how, within six years, he had decided to embark upon his own enterprise, while also narrating how his adventurous spirit and determination came to pay rich dividends in business.
Sr Maria Goretti distributed the prizes for academic excellence and spoke highly about the worthy mission of the college in imparting good education.
Grace Pinto honoured the best outgoing students. In her memorable speech, she complimented the students on their hard work, parents on their support and sacrifices and the staff for their dedication. She also cautioned the students against placing any price-tag on the love shown by their parents and the efficiency and constructive contribution of the teaching staff, which was all aimed at their betterment and ensuring a secure future for them.
College vice president and vicar general Monsignor Fred V Pereira honoured the meritorious staff, while the Bishop honoured the chief guest and the guests of honour for their contribution in promoting the college and seeing it march in the path of success.
Head of Mechanical Engineering department and convener of college day celebrations Dr B N Shantapriya proposed a vote of thanks.
The stage function was followed by a series of creative pieces of variety entertainment by the students. The programme was attended by a large number of students, parents, well-wishers and prominent members of the public. College's assistant director Fr Mascarenhas was also actively involved in the success of the function.
