Darul Uloom issues fatwa against photography

New Delhi, Sep 11 (PTI): India's leading Islamic seminary Darul Uloom has issued a fatwa, saying "photography is unlawful and a sin", even though Saudi Arabia allows photographers inside the holy city of Mecca and live telecast of 'namaz' is beamed on Islamic channels across the world.

Mufti Abdul Qasim Nomani, Mohtamim (Vice-Chancellor) of Darul Uloom Deoband, told PTI on phone, "Photography is un-Islamic. Muslims are not allowed to get their photos clicked unless it is for an identity card or for making a passport."

He said Islam does not permit video-taping of marriages or clicking of pictures to save as mementos for future generations.

When pointed out that Saudi Arabia, which follows the Wahabi school that aspires to return to the earliest fundamental sources of Islam, allows photography in the holiest of Islamic cities Mecca and beams live coverage through the year, Nomani said, "Let them do it. We do not allow it. Not everything they do is correct."

Nomani agreed with the fatwa -- a religious edict issued by Darul Ifta in Deoband -- regarding a query from an engineering graduate saying he was passionate about photography and wanted to pursue it as a career.

"Photography is unlawful and sin. Hadith (recorded Islamic tradition) warns sternly against it. Do not do this course. You should search any suitable job based on your engineering course," reads the fatwa posted on the school's website.

All India Muslim Law Personal Board member Mufti Abul Irfan Qadri Razzaqi also agreed with Nomani's fatwa.

"Islam forbids photographing of humans and animals. Whoever does that will be answerable to God," Razzaqi told PTI.

When reminded that Saudis allow it, he said, "Just because they are richer than us doesn't mean they are also correct. If they are allowing photography they will be answerable on the Day of Judgement in the court of God."

A similar fatwa was issued when a television reporter asked if his "facing the video camera" is against Islam.

"You are right, it is prohibited in Islam to photograph and to let others photograph you. Therefore, you should seek forgiveness from Allah for the same and choose for you a work which is free from such prohibited acts.

"A work which involves unlawful and haram things is obviously unlawful. If the work includes oral or written reporting as well then the entire income will not be labelled as haram," reads another fatwa.

However, Mufti Saif Abbas, president of the Shia Chand Committee, said his sect allows photography and television viewing. "Islamic channels such as Peace TV, QTV, ARY and others beam live coverage of namaz, Hajj...are they all wrong? I have argued with my Sunni colleagues that there is nothing wrong with photography," he said.

    Dear friends
    SALAAM WALAIKUM,

The Quranic verses confirm the fact that the intention behind making images has to be virtuous. Images made with bad intention (for worship) are disallowed and images made out of good intention are allowed in Islam.

Reverence is different from worship. Some people argue that reverence is the first step, which is usually followed by worship. This argument does not hold good for Muslim because they clearly know the difference between reverence and worship.

Every religion is good. The holy books guiding us on our journey towards eternal father. However, the greatest book is our heart. God dwells in every human heart. When we do something wrong, we can hear a silent voice within us warning about wrong doing. If you neglect that voice and continue with evil, gradually voice of your heart & conscience will cease warning you. Follow you inner voice and principles of every religion is in it. May God bless us all.

As far as myunderstanding of Hadith is that photography with decency is allowed and painting or creation of replica of living being is not allowed as photography is the exact copy of the person/image where as painting is done by hand and cant be perfect like photography..Photogrpahy of flora and fauna is allowed..Painting of living beings and creation of replicas of living beings cant be 100% like the original life..so accordnig to hadith, it means interference with the Creation of Allah... ONly Allah knows best. I may be wrong..but I work and apply my conscious and understanding of Islam and so I dont object to the decent photography

Religion is for human beings and not human beings for religion. If any religion oppresses people like forbidding human practices which the society accepts and permits then it is not religion but hell. The true God laughs and scorns at the foolishness/madness and blindness of people who pose obstacles in the lives of people like issuing fatwa. The true religion must permit people to enjoy this life in peace/harmony and help others to do the same.

I fail to understand what is so unholy about clicking photographs, logically the only reason one would not allow to click a person's photograph is to hide ones own identity.

Is there something or someone to really hide from....I dont think the concept of Identity card was mentioned thousand years back. How did these clerics decide that this could be ok for id cards and not ok for other purposes.

Could some islamic experts throw some light on this point so that our confusion is cleared.

To get publicity or otherwise, these Maulvis (learned teacher) simply say something out of box.
Whilst there is a difference of opinion on the matter of photography, the dominant opinion of the modern Scholars of High Knowledge is that photography is permissible as long as they are of benefit and not for any harmful or prohibited purposes, and that photographs of humans and animals not be displayed.
In this modern world, for anything and everything one need to produce their photograph, may be id, passport, riding/driving licence, credit card, voter's id, PAN card, Hajj id, police id, court id etc. etc.

There is nothing new in this Fatwa. Islam is a perfect religion as stated in the holy Quran - Surah Al-Maeda (5-3) "To-day I have perfected for you your religion, and have completed My favor upon you, and am well-pleased with Islam as your religion". Therefore nobody can add to it or deduct from it until the Doomsday. What we need is to read the holy Quran translated in our well versed language to understand it. See the video clips in YouTube of those people who have reverted to Islam recently in Europe and/or in America.

There is a difference of opinion amongst the scholars regarding photography. Most of the people, they just believe and quote the scholar without checking what he has quoted and from where he has got it.There is hadith about Tasveer painting or imaging of an animate object is indeed forbidden. What I believe there is no verse in the Quran or the hadith that which says that the television is prohibited. But that Hadith doesn't mean about photography and videography because at the time of the Prophet(PBUH) photography & videography wasn't there, so according to me watching wrong thing on the television, like obscenity, like pornography, that is haraam.

If it is required by the concerned departments of any government services for the purpose of identification or any security reasons or if it is required in propagation of Islamic teaching by any media then it is allowed that too only if there are no other option available and it becomes mandatory to take photograph. Many scholars from worldwide has given permission for that and issued fatwa regarding the same.

There is nothing about being rich or poor. Arabs or non Arabs. Islam is equal for each and every followers of it. Purpose of telecasting live beam of Mecca and other holy places are for propagating and spreading Islamic teaching to the world through these channels. That is not for fun or memories. Islamic scholars in Saudi Arabia don't say it is allowed to take photograph. I don't know from where this Indian scholar got this information. Saudi Arabian government don't allow photographs of women in any form of print advertising and there many strict rules regarding the same here. I don't understand why some people talk about Saudi even though they never been here or have any knowledge of systems.
