Shivbagh Welfare Society initiates 'Nirmala Mangaluru Abhiyan'

Mangalore, Aug 22: 'Nirmala Mangaluru Abhiyana'-'Keep Mangalore Clean and Green Campaign' was initiated by the Shivbagh Public Welfare Society, here on Thursday August 22 near St Agnes College Mangalore.

The campaign was inaugurated in a unique way with J R Lobo, Mangalore South MLA who dumped a basket of waste into the dustbin.

Students of the school and college along with the public, joined hands in this campaign to convert Mangalore into a greener and cleaner city.

Speaking to the media, J R Lobo said "in order to keep our city green, we must first learn to keep our surroundings clean. Proper waste management is the main aspect that plays a vital role in keeping our surroundings clean."

"The MCC officials or the administration solely cannot keep our city clean. It the public who have to support this cause, join hands with the public and see to it that our surrounding is clean and tidy. Harmful waste, especially plastic have been avoided upto a maximum extent and so also the organic wastes have been transformed into fertilizers, so as to avoid an over load of waste in the Pacchanady dumping yards as well.

"Full support and positive response from the public is a must to keep our city clean and green," he added.

The waste bins, to support the cause, were sponsored by Louis Lobo, MD, Paramount Reality and Infrastructures.

Corporators Sabitha Misquith, Naveen D’Souza, leaders Judith Mascarenhas, T K Sudhir, Nelson Montheiro, Cyril, Mohan Mendon, Jayakar, Samartha, Shanthi, Mohan, entrepenuer Louis Lobo (Ex-Kuwait)  and others were present.

    If JR Lobo wants to keep the city clean,he should take a good round of the city specially the little interior areas. He should even try to see the mess created by the big constructions coming up in not so big places. The case in point is an under construction mall in Pandeshwar, opposite the head post office. The whole place is a total mess and utter chaos prevails there with haphazardly parked heavy lorries which occupy most part of the road thereby creating nuisance for the public. The heavy traffic has made a mess of this road with big potholes, and nobody to repair that. Hopefully once the mall opens to the public it doesnt add to the chaos and mess that is already there. Mr. JR Lobo, please look into this also.

    When Shivabagh residents protested twice under the leadership of Arun Noronha, an active youngster of Shivabagh ward against the then Corporator Gretta Rebello, J R Lobo was (still is) a resident of the same area and turned a blind eye towards their protests. Now for publicty sake he is seen carrying a basket of waste, what for ? As an MLA first develop the area you live in.

    Just another farce by JLR. If he is really interested in keeping Mangalore clean and green let him pick up really dirty, stinking and rot filled baskets in his bare hands and throw it in Pachanady dump yard.

    Another sincere advise to the VIPs present in these photos is 'do not use small children in your publicity stunts".

    Congratulations to the members of Shibabagh Welfare Soceity, Mr. J.R. Lobo our M.L.A. to Mr. Louis Fr. Antony Serrao, and all those who participate in this "Nirmala Mangaluru Abiyan" to keep our city clean and Green. According to me both things are important: a solid plan and ution of this waste by the muncipal authorities to motivate people to separate waste into various sections, not to throw it anywhere but to put into the waste-bins kept in particular places, to dispose of the waste in time, and hold awareness sessions in various localities, to make awaitlable bags which are alternative to plastic, etc on the other hand, we, every member of our society, should love to keep ourselves, our houses, surroundings and the public places clean by taking self and common responsibility by our determination, co-operation and daily efforts. Some people push the waste to the road or other's compound and think that their compound is clean! But that too will hit them back by the pollution caused outside. Throwing papers and things public places contributes to public pollution. Lets join hands together to make our city a sweet home for all. Let this initiative grow in all of us. Without blaming others, let us begin from our own homes. I wish all the best to the Abhiyan and pray for its success.

    We D.Kannada people are called intellectuals and educated lot but doesnt follow cleanliness. As told by our MLA J.R.Lobo first of all we should keep our surroundings clean. Then only our city will become green.Such kind Nirmala Abhiyana be held in other places also.This kind of awareness should be created among all so that our city turn into green and clean.

    Cleanliness - a broad concept indeed. Outward cleanliness is what is being talked here. Every person must pay attention to his or her own cleanliness by taking bath everyday!! Then comes keeping the bed room, rest room clean. Further expanding, it is the house n surrounding premises one has to keep neat n tidy. All this involves private/individual efforts. Luckily nature has provided us with good nose that can detect foul smell, and good eyesight to detect wastage littered around. Outside our compounds, it is the duty of municipality n public to join hands to sustain cleanliness in public spaces. Keeping clean is a perpetual process !!

    Waste is a precious resource. Is contains lot of energy and renewable materials which can be put to use if proper mechanism is designed towards segregating domestic/industrial waste. At home, most kitchen/household stuff wil decompose with time which could be used as fertilizer. Similarly metal , glass, plastic all have value in recycling process. Scrap collection mechanism in India is great and works well. Every-day waste also needs a similar plan to make best use of waste.

    Let us not block nose when we encounter waste rather we need to be realistic that foul smell is part of our own existence. Some people deliberately pretend to block air entering their nose but in real they cant block air supply. Infact they breath through mouth!!

    Mr. Lobo should make sure that once the location of the bin is confirmed it should not be changed. Powerful one shifting it because it stinks, people dont throw in to bins or its overflowing

    It is the duty of every citizen to keep the surroundings, roads and lanes clean by not throwing rubbish and spitting at public places. In Singapore or other foreign countries fine the people for throwing rubbish in public and we follow the rule, but the moment we land in our country we do exactly opposite.
