National integration camp from Jan 4

Beltangady: A national integration camp will be held at Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara (SDM) ITI, Venur from Wednesday to Tuesday.

Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade will inaugurate the camp on Wednesday.

Bangalore department of Employment and Training director C N Seetaram, Nitte Education Trust president N Vinay Hegde, NSI Regional Centre official A M R Kotraiah, assistant officer H S Suresh and deputy director K Ramachandrappa will participate.

The seven-day camp is jointly organized by union ministry of youth and sports, state's employment guidance and training department, National Service Scheme division and SDM Education Trust. Department of pre-university education director Gonal Bheemappa will deliver valedictory address.

School churns out book-lovers

Udupi: The Olakaad High School,  to motivate its students to develop the habit of reading books among the students has introducted ‘Read books and win prizes,’ the unique scheme continued for the third consecutive year.

The school has set an example for other government schools by the quality of education it  imparts. School alumni and Infosys vice-president U Ramdas Kamath, a book lover himself, has great fascination for his alma mater and has donated more than 10,000 books worth Rs 15 lakh.

In the present academic year, nearly 250 students registered their names for the scheme. Parents who are always worried about their children getting carried away by television, may be surprised to know that these students read a total of 25,000 books, most of them novels and books on general topics.

Out of these students, 30 will be honoured with cash prizes of Rs 500 each at the annual day celebration of the school to be held on Saturday.

Youth goes missing

Mangalore: A youth is reported missing since Dec 30. Kishore A (21), son of Madhav a constable of DAR is reported to be missing.

He is fair in complexion and is about 5.6 feet tall. A case has been filed in the south police station.

Two booked in factory explosion case

Kasargod: The Kumble police registered a case against two persons with regard to an explosion in a fire cracker manufacturing unit at Arikkady in which two persons were killed and a person was grievously injured.

The police infoemed, that a case has been registered for negligence in following precautions as mentioned in the Exploives Control Act while manufacturing explosive substances, against Shariff, son of Mohammed, who is injured, and Abubakker Siddiq who holds lincence for making crackers.

Irshad(20), son of Ibrahim, Arikkady and Sanjeeva(22) from Badiyadka died in the accident. It is said, that crackers were being manufactured for a festival to be held at Kumbe shortly.

Three workers who had gone to a nearby building just before the explosives ere lucky to have survived.
