Bantwal: Truck stuck in gaping hole on railway overbridge

Bantwal, Apr 5: On Thursday April 4, a truck strayed onto the footpath of the railway overbridge at B C Road here and got stranded there, after concrete slabs of the footpath cracked under its weight. As a result, traffic jam was caused on national highway there for some time.

The overbridge is located directly above the railway lines, and the footpath here has been posing considerable risk because of the fact that the slabs placed there have been breaking down often and giving rise to yawning gaps. This is a very old overbridge, and several slabs on the footpath have come off since the last some time, endangering the lives of pedestrians and vehicle drivers particularly at night.

As the department concerned had failed in its duty, the local people used to keep twigs at these yawning gaps, and display warning boards, to forewarn the road users. On Thursday morning, the driver of a truck that was carrying a load of over 40 tonnes, lost control of the vehicle while negotiating the overbridge. The tyres moved on weak concrete slabs on the footpath, as a result of which the slabs fell down.

Luckily, no loss of lives occurred in this incident. The policemen engaged a crane immediately to lift the truck aside. The operation took about an hour, during which period, employees, people bound for various destinations etc got stuck on the overbridge. It is learnt that various organizations here are drawing up a plan to hold protest, if safety measures are not undertaken to reinforce the footpath immediately and make it safe for the road users.

    Mr. Ravi Kotian,Padubidri: It is not the new fly over bridge. It is the very old bridge constructed over the Railway lines.
    But regarding the new fly over bridges constructed by National Highway Authority of India,through their Contractor IRCON (Indian Railway Construction Co.), the entire work of flyover bridges starting from Surathkal to B.C. Road, is sub standard and I do not know how many years they will last, and it is a Big Million Dollar Question. The entire work is sub standard. We can see the pathetic condition of the Kaikamba Kulshekar fly over bridge, near Syndicate Bank, which is under construction.

    Even God can not save this Country from corruption and looting. Jai Hind.

    Arvind Bhai, will you not climb foot path to avoid collision(head on)???? If ur sunk Will you still say a fragile footpath is fine which is meant only for walking??? Your kind of gamar must have approved specification for weak foot path on the bridge!!!

    Arvind Bhai...Why are you supporting cheap quality job? I am only making a mole hill of a mountain! If passing vehicle sinks on footpath....walking man stands on footpath too will sink...thanks to the quality of construction! Learn from British built bridges!! I always feel British should have ruled 20 years more for better, roads, bridges and railways!!! I bet Briton engineers are less corrupt or not corrupted compared to Indian govt paid Engineers and contractors!! Start pressing disagree button patriots for the love of our sinking roads, bridges and public utility paid by hard working and dignified tax payer!!!!!!!

    It is a new flyover bridge. How can this happen. Catch hold of the road contractor IRCON and black list this Central Govt. Company.

    That portion of the bridge will not be repaired until 25 people die due to the gaping hole. Some more people and vehicles will fall into it. Wait and watch. Saturday & Sunday are holidays for Central Govt. staff. So the next will be Monday. In the meantime no effort will be made to temporarily close that hole. God help the people of BC Road till then.

    The Highway Authority will not be bothered unless some 25 people die due to this. This is the sad part of the Indian system. The blame will keep shifting from Dept. to Dept. and / or Official to Official. Nobody will take personal responsibility.

    Arrest the concerned department head on non bailable warrant for failing in his duty, gross negligence and endangering public life!!! Take DC to task for neglecting such major issues!!

    Why Ronald Bhai, Why? Foot path is meant for pedestrians, not for vehicles to ply on the foot path. So why blame authorities for that? It is just an accident, just leave it at it :) Why make a mountain of a mole hill....

    Talking of 'Gaping Holes'this takes the cake for swallowing that too on a State Highway !! Keep your eyes 'Wide Open' and don't 'Yawn' dear drivers-Beware of 'Yawning Gaps'(!) on roads!!
