Udupi, Apr 3: ‘Democracy in our country, has been facing grave danger from people and parties which try to achieve their goals by hatching political conspiracies that are ulterior in nature and debase. It is wrong to choose illegitimate ways to further one’s political career. The civil society cannot tolerate character assassinations of political leaders through covert means,’ was the general opinion that emerged at an apolitical convention of citizens organized under the aegis of Prajaprabhutva Samrakshana Vedike, under the title, ‘Conserve Dignity of Democracy’.
The convention was organized at Chitharanjan Circle here on Tuesday, April 2.
Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Pejawar Math, who was the chief guest, in his address, demanded a thorough inquiry into the alleged involvement of MLA Raghupati Bhat in an immoral sex act that has been widely publicized through a CD. He felt that only a detailed investigation can bring out the truth behind the CD in question. He noted that scientific advances, which have come as a boon to the world, are also being misused.
“Mobile phones and televisions are misleading people. Being an apolitical person and religious leader, I opine that it would be wrong to come to a conclusion about the character of a person based on insinuative concoctions of untrue information about any person. While I am not interested in pinpointing any particular person or political party for the wrongs, I deem that indulging in character assassination of a person without knowing the truth is not right,” he added.
Former Rotary governor, Jnanavasanta Shetty, stressed that democracy in the country is facing grave danger from money, liquor, and malicious propaganda. “Those who win elections with the help of these things can never be accepted as true representatives of the people,” he announced. He said that all the political parties should behave like brothers engaged in the welfare of the people, and that the people’s representatives should be questioned if they stray from the path of people’s welfare and overall development.
Bolyottu Sri Vikhyatananda Swamiji, Hosmar, expressed regret at the fact that democratic principles have stooped to such low levels because of the acts of a few power-hungry persons. Former central Kannada Sahitya Parishat president, Harikrishna Punaroor, demanded punishment for those who are guilty of undermining democracy. Dakshina Kannada district Kannada Sahitya Parishat president, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, expressed the opinion that the attempts at character assassination of opponents are used by people who are frustrated at their own failures.
Several leaders like K K Naik, Balakrishna Hegde, Tallur Rama, Balaji Raghavendra Acharya, and Ranjan Kalkura were present. Vasudeva Bhat presented the programme and delivered introductory address.
