Kundapur, Mar 31: A youngster who went for a bath in a pond at Kenchanur Shetrakatte lost his life here on Sunday March 31.
The deceased has been identified as Udaya Poojary (19), the third son of Kariya Poojary, a resident of Basanamane near Kenchanur. Kariya is a worker in Greenland tile factory.
As it was a holiday for college, Udaya helped his father in the fields. Later on, at around 2 pm, he went for a bath along with his elder brother and a cousin identified as Ravi. They went to a pond attached to a neighbouring plantation.
It is said that after Udaya lowered himself into the water, he got stuck in the mud at the bottom of the pond. Panic-striken, the other two boys raised an alarm and began shouting for help.
On hearing their cries, Udaya's father rushed to the spot and got into the pond to rescue his son. Udaya whose condition was critical was rushed to Kundapur government hospital, where he was pronounced brought dead.
Udaya was a first year BBM student of M Varadraj Shetty Government First Grade College, Koteshwar. The college declared revision holidays three days ago, and hence he was home helping his father in the fields and in household chores. Last two days he had been to the pond during the afternoon after finishing his work.
Udaya is survived by his parents Kariya and Nagaratna, and siblings Chandra, Ganapathi, Veena, Ravi, Sharada, Suraj and Shyamala.
Kundapur police have registered a case.
