Mangalore: Students get tips on success, leadership at SJEC Annual Day

Mangalore, Mar 20: A splendid ceremony marked the tenth annual day celebrations of St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor here on Tuesday March 19.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Aloysius Paul D’ Souza, Bishop of Mangalore lauded the achievements of students and said society needs good leaders of good morality, value and integrity. "Though you are tempted by several evil powers, never get distracted. Be your own master. Success can be gained through hard work, be more effective and efficient, respect your parents and teachers," he said.
N Prakash deputy commissioner and district magistrate of Dakshina Kannada in his address said, “Students are really lucky to pursue education in Dakshina Kannada. The universities, education institutions resemble historical Nalanda and Thakshasheela universities. Same time, devote at least an hour to maintain physical fitness.”
Guest of honour R Basil, co-founder and chairman of Lily White Health Consortium Pvt Ltd, Bangalore, said that these days information technology had changed the lives of people and provided great opportunities for students to excel.
“In earlier days there were no facilities like internet, computers or cell phones. But, in the present contemporary scenario information technology has made room for opportunities to the students. Today we have campus interviews and various facilities. In three decades of my experience I have learnt that success and positive development leads to transformation. The people who can transform themselves can transform the society,” he said.
Basil also said self-motivation is the key to success. "Every student should dream, hope, have an aim, as well as purpose to reach the goal. Dreams are internal motivators, which motivate one to reach one's goal. Dreams are powerful tools of an individual to achieve his goals," he said.
Citing the examples of John F Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Barrack Obama, he asked the students to imbibe the qualities of absolute perseverance and said that 'heroism lies in walkingg long of miles'. "Never feel secured in comfort zone, face the problems, try to excel to whatever you do," he added.
"Make an early start early to the day by praying to god. Be cheerful, imbibe qualities of humour, laugh, spend time with people, be receptive to the feedback and criticisms, work together, respect yourself, be self confidence, and you will be excellent," he said.
Dr Vincent Crasta, Fr J B Saldanha, Dr Rio D’ Souza, Fr Rohith D’ Costa, Fr Ajith Menezes Dr Joseph Gonslaves, Fr Joseph Lobo were present on the dais.
