Mangalore, Dec 24: A 9-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare heart disease got fresh lease of life after electrical ablation treatment to the heart by team of doctors lead by Dr Yusuf Kumble, Dr Ali Kumble and associates at Indiana Hospital and Heart Institute, here.
The 9-year-old old male child from Kanhangad, Kerala was presented at Indiana Hospital and Heart Institute, Mangalore with a major heart disease.
Everything was fine and normal for this boy (the only son of his parents) until a month back when he had a severe abdominal pain and vomiting. He was admitted to a hospital in Kanhangad and thereafter to many hospitals in and around the district and even in Mangalore. The root cause for these symptoms could not be diagnosed even after weeks of admission to various hospitals.
They glimpse of hope they reached Dr Ali Kumble, chief pediatrician at Indiana Hospital and Heart Institute, famous for treating pediatric and heart related ailments. After relevant cardiac evaluations the cardiac team led by chief interventional cardiologist Dr Yusuf Kumble found out that the child had severe heart failure named ‘Tachycardiomyopathy’, the root cause for the symptoms. This disease is a very rare one and the long term prognosis is very poor if not treated appropriately. The only treatment available for the same was Radio Frequency Ablation (RF Ablation). Indiana Hospital is the only hospital in South Karnataka to have the equipments and facility to do RF Ablation. Even Northern Kerala doesn’t have such facilities.
The boy who was admitted at Indiana has completely recovered after the complex RFA procedure and his parents are short of words in thanking Dr Yusuf Kumble, chief interventional cardiologist and managing director of Indiana Hospital, Dr Ali Kumble, chief pediatrician and chairman, Dr Ramprakash and his supporting staff for giving back their only son.
Electro-physiology is the electrical study of the heart to recognize the speed of heart beat and its mechanism. Heart usually beats at the rate of 70bt/mt. But rarely it might go to even 300-400bts/mt which can cause sudden cardiac death and on the reverse, heart beat even go down to 20-30bt/mt which again is a drastic condition wherein a pacemaker should be implanted to bring the heart back to normal state. These variations can only be studied using a electro-physiology lab and these heart diseases can be completely cured by inserting a catheter into the heart and ablating the electrical focus (Radio Frequency Ablation)
Till recently this facility was available only at major cities like Bangalore, Cochin etc. But now Indiana Hospital and Heart Institue has introduced this electro-physiology lab to its current cardiology facilities and now patients can be treated for these rare diseases without having to travel to Bangalore or other cities for getting the therapy.
With the introduction of this new technique Mangalore has been recognized in global map in fulfilling health care needs. Indiana Hospital and Heart Institute is constantly doing its efforts to fulfill the health care need of a common man at affordable price, said Dr Yusuf Kumble, managing director.
