Blood Donation Camp Inaugurated at Mangalore University

Mangalore, November 24: Department of Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ), Master of Social Work of Mangalore University, in association with the Lions, Lioness and Leo Club of Mangalagangothri and Indian Red Cross Society of India organized a blood donation camp here in the campus on Friday November 23.

In his inaugural address, district governor 317-D of Lions’ Club, MJF Ln MB Sadashiv said, “About 1.40 lac people die every year due to road accidents. There is a need for 10 million units of blood whereas we have only five million units of them”. He urged the students to donate blood. 

 

 

 

 


Addressing the gathering, chief guest pro chancellor, Nitte University, Dr Shantharam Shetty M, said, “As a surgeon I have faced many problems due to the shortage of blood supply in case of emergency”. He further stressed that blood donation is the greatest of all as it saves life of the person. Encouraging the young generation to donate blood, he said, “It is the right time to give blood”.

In his presidential address, vice chancellor, Mangalore University, Professor TC Shivshankara Murthy said, “About 114 people die every hour in India due to malnutrition and anaemic problems. More than 65 percent of our population is below the age 35 years”. Therefore he asked students to donate blood for the needy. 

Dr GP Shivram, staff advisor of Communication Club of MCJ Dept welcomed the gathering. In his address, he opined that blood donation is a greatest community service and requested the students, staff and non staff members of the University to register their names as blood donors through email.

The inauguration was followed by the blood donation camp.  Students, members of various organisations, teaching and non-teaching members donated blood at the Health Centre, Mangalore University. More than 100 members participated in the camp.

In addition, Mangalore University Blood Donor’s Group was also inaugurated on the occasion. It was initiated by the Communication Club of Department of Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ) to give blood to the needy people in emergency cases. They may contact mublooddonors@gmail.com.

Dr Mohan S Singe of MSW Department proposed the vote of thanks.

Dr Waheeda Sultana, chairperson of MCJ Dept, P Bhagavandas Kajava, Vinatha Kajava, PS Prabhakar, Dr Kishore Kumar CK, students and faculty of various departments of Mangalore University were present on the occasion.
