Udupi, Nov 19: Zilla Panchayath Udupi, Gram Panchayat Bommarbettu, jointly organized a District Level World Toilet Day.
This day is celebrated all over the world to draw attention to the public and educate them for the need of toilets and global sanitation. This programme was held at Dr B R Ambedkar Bhavan, Bommarbettu Hiryadka Panchayath on Monday, November 19.
Upendra Nayak, ex ZP president inaugurated the function and said that in the district 108 panchayath’s have successfully completed the movement of setting up toilets in every house. "39 panchayaths are pending and our goal is to be a 100% sanitized district with toilet facilities in each and every house", he said.
The government now provides up to Rs 10, 000 aid under "Suvarna Gramodaya" Scheme to build toilets. He appealed to the public to utilize the plans provided by the government and contributed to the society.
"Plastic ban is another step to the sanitation. “Nirmala gramma” is the aim of our district and Karkala Taluk comes under Nirmala gramma. It is now time for Udupi and Kundapur to step up", he said.
Udhaya Kumar Shetty, said the subject is related to the dignity, it’s a true fact that globally 55% people are struggling with this problem in India. Everyone should have the right information on health and sanitation. Alhough the government, in 1986 has introduced the “Rural Sanitation Scheme” it has not been successful.
Rajani R Nayak (president Bommarbettu Panchayath),Ram Kulal (president Taluk Panchayath), Pranesh Rao, Sridhar Nayak, Upendra Nayak, Umesh Shetty and others were present.
