Udupi: Dr Eugene D'Souza Principal of New Degree College at Moodubelle

Udupi, May 30: Dr Eugene D'Souza has been appointed as the first principal of the newly established St Lawrence Degree College at Moodubelle, the first in the Udupi Varado. The new degree college with Arts and Commerce faculties, which has already received the approval of the Mangalore University and sanction from the Karnataka State Government, will commence its first academic year from June 14, 2012. The infrastructural preparations for conducting the courses and the appointment of qualified and experienced lecturers have already been completed. The admissions for both the courses are going on.
Dr Eugene D'Souza has wide experience in the field of higher education in Mumbai. He had served for 30 years as the Head of the Department of History in VPM'S K G Joshi College of Arts and N G Bedekar College of Commerce, Thane. During these years he held important positions such as Chairman of Gymkhana, Time-Table, Examination and Discipline committees. He was also assigned administrative responsibility as the Professor-in-charge of the Junior College for two years.
Having undergone NCC (Naval Wing) training, Dr Eugene D'Souza was in charge of the NCC (Naval Wing) in the college for a period of 22 years and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was the Post Graduate Lecturer in the R K Talreja College, Ulhasnagar for nearly 20 years and in the Department of History, Mumbai University for ten years. Dr Eugene D'Souza was also a member of Mumbai University bodies such as Board of Studies in History and Archaeology and Academic Council.
Dr Eugene D'Souza was appointed as the Guide to supervise the research work of students for PhD degree through St Xavier's College, Mumbai and was successful in guiding four students for the PhD degree under the Mumbai University.
While teaching in college, Dr Eugene D'Souza used his compiling and writing skills to bring out text-books in History for graduate and undergraduate students of the Mumbai University. He had also written course material in History for M.A. students.
Before his retirement at the end of August 2006, Dr Eugene D'Souza served as the Principal of Asmita College of Arts and Commerce for Women at Vikhroli (East), Mumbai for eighteen months.
After his retirement, Dr Eugene D'Souza did not take any appointment as he was keen to pursue his interest in travelling, photography and writing. His travelogues supplemented by pictures have been a regular feature in daijiworld.com with which he was associated for more than five years contributing exclusive articles on various subjects, especially on historical topics.
Dr Eugene D'Souza shifted his base to Moodubelle, his native village three years ago and has been serving as the Media Coordinator of Bellevision.com.
When the proposal to start a degree college in Moodubelle was floated by the Management of St Lawrence Educational Institutions and concerned people, Dr Eugene D'Souza, who had experience in college education in Mumbai was the unanimous choice to head the new St Lawrence Degree College as the principal.
