Beltangady, May 5: “A clear majority is unlikely in electing a successor to President Pratibha Patil,” said union former minister and Rajya Sabha member Oscar Fernandes.
Addressing media persons at K Vasant Bangera’s residence here on Friday May 4, Fernandes who was on a visit to the newly-inaugurated Hoy Redeemer Church said that the UPA will arrive at a decision on the choice of future President after discussing the issues with key members of Congress and coalition members of the UPA. He added that its likely that a unanimous choice would be difficult due to many political parties.
“Union funds are assured for the state to overcome severe drought. In the past, there were no separate funds for drought and floods but it has been introduced to face the hardships. Union study teams are likely to gather first-hand information based on the report submitted by state government and funds will be released,” said Fernandes.
When the media men drew the attention of Fernandes to the stalling of several works under ‘Pradan Mantri’s Gram Sadak Yojana’, he replied that remedial measures will be taken in this regard. He also commented about the rising inflation in the country and said that the economic set-up in India is strongly founded when compared to other countries.
“There are a few complications within the country. The rise in earning of the working class and hike in prices of crude oil in the international market also contribute to hike in inflation,” he added.
“KPCC has been divided into four divisions to strengthen the party and the charge has been given to four union ministers,” he said. In commenting on the political-tussle in the state, Fernandes said that the tussle between the reigning CM and former CM is up to that party. BJP has been forecasting legislative assembly elections, while Congress has no hurry, since it can face decisively, said Oscar.
