Udupi, May 4: 89-year-old Hiriadka Dasa Sherigar, veteran Congressman and leader of Devadiga community, passed away at his residence ‘Ganesh Prasad, Hiriadka’, near Manipal here on Friday May 4.
He was a popular LIC agent in 1971 when T A Pai was the country’s union finance minister.
Known to everyone as Dasanna, he was born on April 24, 1924 to a then prominent personality of Devadiga community Adpi Sheena Sherigar and Akku Sherigarthi at Hiriadka.
He was responsible for establishing Devadiga Sangha at Hiriadka which is one of the well-known Sanghas. He was the president of Karnataka Rajya Devadiga Sangha - Upasangha, Hiriadka and under his presidentship the Devadiga Bhavan was constructed in 2002.
He was the chairman of the Milk Producer's Society, member of Block Congress committee, member of school betterment committees and peace committee in the village.
He also served as the vice-president of the Karnataka Rajya Devadiga Sudharaka Sangha, Mangalore for quite a long period and was actively associated with Mangalore Sangha during its golden jubilee celebrations.
He is survived by his wife Radha D Sherigar and three sons Nithyanand, Ganesh and Devadiga Sangha Mumbai president Hiriadka Mohandas.
The mortal remains of Dasa Sherigar will be placed for public homage at Devadiga Sangha auditorium, Hiriyadka, at 3 pm on Saturday May 5 and his last rites will be held at the local crematorium.
Union minister M Veerappa Moily, Devadiga Sangha vice-presidents Ravi S Devadiga and Vasu S Devadiga, honorary chief secretary Sundar C Moily, past president K K Mohandas, former presidents Gopal M Moily, Dharmapal U Devadiga, women’s wing president Pushpa S Devadiga, Jayasrikrishna Parisara Premi Samiti founder president Tonse Jayakrishna A Shetty and others condoled the demise of Dasa Sherigar.
