Mangalore: After Nirmal Gram Award, District Wins Another National Honour

Mangalore, Apr 26: The Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat (ZP) which recently bagged the central Nirmal Gram award, has now been conferred with yet another honour by the centre.
The ZP has won the top Rs 25-lac award under the Panchayat Empowerment and Accountability Incentive Scheme (PEAIS). The award has been instituted by the department of panchayat raj and rural development by the central government.
DK is only the 13th zilla panchayat in the nation to win this award.
The award was presented to ZP president Shailaja Bhat on Tuesday April 24 by union rural development minister Jairam Ramesh at a glittering ceremony in New Delhi.
Karnataka rural development and panchayat raj minister Jagadish Shetter and union minister for tribal affairs and panchayati raj V Kishore Chandra Deo were also present.
DK was chosen for the award based criteria like frequency of meetings, maintenance of records and accounts, planning and development, implementation of government schemes, transperancy in running the affairs and extent of member participation. It is said that the district scored high in all the parameters.
