New Delhi, Apr 26: In a decisive move aimed at safeguarding national security, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Saturday issued a directive prohibiting all media platforms from airing live coverage of military operations and troop movements.
The advisory, addressed to news outlets, digital media, and social media users, called for strict adherence to existing regulations and responsible reporting on defence-related matters.
"In the national interest, media platforms, agencies, and online users must act responsibly and comply with established laws while reporting on military and security affairs," the Ministry stated.

The government has explicitly banned real-time visuals, live reporting from sensitive zones, and the use of "source-based" information during active operations. Officials warned that releasing operational details prematurely could unintentionally assist adversaries, putting missions and personnel at risk.
Drawing lessons from incidents like the Kargil War, the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, and the Kandahar hijacking, the Ministry pointed out that unrestricted live coverage in the past had caused serious damage to national interests.
The advisory emphasized the shared responsibility of media and individuals to protect operational integrity and the safety of the forces. "Beyond legal duty, it is a moral obligation not to compromise security through careless reporting," it added.
The statement also reinforced Rule 6(1)(p) of the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021, which prohibits live coverage of anti-terrorist operations. Media outlets are only permitted to report based on official briefings until an operation concludes.
The Ministry warned of strict legal action for any violations and urged all television channels to immediately cease live broadcasts involving counter-terror operations or troop movements.
