Mumbai, Apr 26: Mumbai Police on Saturday revealed that Tahawwur Rana, a key conspirator in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, was not cooperating during interrogation and was giving evasive responses.
Rana, currently in NIA custody after being extradited from the US, was questioned by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch for nearly eight hours at the agency’s Delhi office. Officials said Rana, 64, failed to provide clear answers on crucial aspects related to the planning of the 2008 terror strike that killed over 166 people.
Investigators are probing Rana’s links to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Pakistan's ISI, and other operatives like David Headley, Abdur Rehman Hashim Syed, Sajjid Majid, Illyas Kashmiri, and Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi. The focus remains on decoding the three-year-long groundwork laid for the attack.
Rana, a former officer in the Pakistan Army Medical Corps and a Canadian citizen, claimed memory lapses on key details from the 17-year-old incident.
He was extradited from Los Angeles and landed in Delhi on April 11, where he was arrested by the NIA and remanded to 18 days' custody. His extradition is seen as a significant breakthrough in India’s quest for justice in the 26/11 case.
