Mumbai, Apr 20: Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal has blamed the state government's ‘anti-farmer’ policies for the suicide of a young farmer couple in Parbhani. He accused the government of failing to address the increasing debt burden on farmers, which has been worsened by the declining prices of agricultural produce.
In a post on social media, Sapkal pointed out that the government's unfulfilled promise of a farm loan waiver had further deepened the farmers' despair. He described this as a "deception" by the Devendra Fadnavis-led government, which he claimed was responsible for pushing farmers to the brink.
The couple, Sachin Balaji Jadhav and his wife Jyotsna, who was seven months pregnant, tragically took their lives in Malsonna village. Sapkal termed their death a "murder" and called out the government's negligence in protecting the interests of the farming community.
"I condemn the government for taking the lives of farmers," Sapkal said, demanding accountability for the deaths.
