New Delhi, Apr 9: In a landmark step towards enhancing patient care and streamlining healthcare services, Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Monday launched the Inter-AIIMS Patient Referral Portal, an innovative digital platform aimed at ensuring seamless and secure coordination between AIIMS institutions across India.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated that the pilot phase of this ambitious project will connect AIIMS New Delhi with AIIMS Bilaspur, enabling smooth patient transfers and referrals between the two institutions. “This pilot will help us identify operational bottlenecks and refine protocols before scaling the system to a national level,” the Ministry said in a statement.
Launched during the eighth Central Institute Body (CIB) meeting of AIIMS, the initiative was hailed as a game-changer in healthcare delivery. Minister Nadda emphasised the power of technology in transforming the health sector. “By leveraging digital solutions, including facial recognition systems and automated workflows, the referral process will become transparent, patient-centric, and error-free,” he said.
He urged all AIIMS institutions to function as a unified community—sharing best practices, learning from each other, and striving for excellence. “High standards in quality, accreditation, and certification must be maintained, and IT should be effectively used to enhance governance and patient convenience,” Nadda added.
The Inter-AIIMS Referral Portal aims to reduce patient waiting times, minimise manual errors, and bring uniformity in medical services offered at AIIMS centres across the country. It is expected to significantly improve access to advanced medical care, especially for patients from remote and underserved regions.
Nadda also highlighted that out of the 22 approved AIIMS across India, 18 are currently operational and providing affordable, world-class healthcare services.
The meeting also saw discussions on transforming AIIMS institutions into Centres of Excellence in education, clinical care, and research.
