New Delhi, Mar 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed deep concern over the devastating earthquakes that struck Myanmar and Thailand, causing widespread destruction, including the collapse of a high-rise under construction in Bangkok.
Taking to X, PM Modi stated, "Concerned by the situation in the wake of the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand."

The powerful 7.7-magnitude quake, with its epicentre in Myanmar, was followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock, sending tremors across the region. In Bangkok, a 30-storey building under construction collapsed, while Myanmar’s Mandalay witnessed severe damage to multiple structures. Emergency response teams have been deployed in both nations.
Notably, one of the affected locations in Bangkok is the venue set to host next week's BIMSTEC summit, where PM Modi and other regional leaders are expected to gather for high-level discussions.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has called an emergency meeting to assess the situation and coordinate relief efforts.
BIMSTEC, which includes India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, and Bhutan, aims to boost regional cooperation. The upcoming summit will focus on strengthening ties and accelerating joint initiatives.
