Toronto, Mar 14: The Grand Convention Centre at Radisson Toronto Airport West in Mississauga was abuzz with excitement as the Canara World Foundation hosted a spectacular felicitation ceremony to honour 12-year-old chess prodigy Aaron Reeve Mendes, who etched his name in history as Canada’s youngest International Master (IM). The evening was a dazzling tribute to Aaron’s remarkable talent, relentless dedication, and the unwavering support of his family, mentors, and community. Filled with inspiring speeches, prestigious awards, and heartfelt moments, the event was a true celebration of excellence and unity.

The event was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including honourable Kapidhwaja Pratap Singh, acting consul general of India in Toronto, and MPP Rudy Cuzzetto of Mississauga—Lakeshore.

The event saw participation from esteemed community organizations, including CCVI-Canada Canara Vision Inc., Goan Association, Kannada Sangha, KCOB-Konkan Catholics of Brampton, KOT-Konkans of Toronto, and Tulu Koota. Chess enthusiasts, skilled players, and FIDE arbiters, alongside representatives from the Chess Federation of Canada, also joined the celebration.

Additionally, St Barbara Catholic Elementary School was proudly represented by its principal and dedicated teachers.

The evening kicked off with a warm welcome by the event’s charismatic host, Megan Periera. Max Mendes, president of the Canara World Foundation and Aaron’s proud uncle, then took the stage to formally welcome the distinguished guests, chess enthusiasts, and community members. Max also acknowledged the pivotal role of Aaron’s school, St Barbara Catholic Elementary School, and its principal, Christine Zeni, in fostering his academic and chess pursuits.

Nancy Mendes, a dedicated member of the Canara World Foundation and Aaron’s aunt, invited MPP Rudy Cuzzetto to the stage. He delivered an uplifting speech, praising Aaron’s achievements and encouraging him to continue reaching for greatness. Due to prior commitments, MPP Cuzzetto departed shortly after his address, leaving the audience inspired by his words.

Nancy Mendes then orchestrated a beautiful flower presentation ceremony to honour the distinguished guests:

Following the flower presentation, principal Christine Zeni took the stage to deliver a heartfelt speech. She spoke passionately about Aaron’s dedication, emphasizing the importance of balancing academics with extracurricular pursuits. Her words underscored the critical role educators play in nurturing young talent and shaping future leaders.

One of the most poignant moments of the evening came when Aaron’s sister, Ayesha Mendes, presented a touching slideshow chronicling Aaron’s journey. From his early days learning the game to his historic IM title, the presentation was a visual testament to the sacrifices, late-night practice sessions, and unwavering family support that fuelled Aaron’s rise to success. The audience was moved by the heartfelt anecdotes and photos that captured the essence of his journey.

Mavy Perriera, an executive member of the Canara World Foundation, spoke about the foundation’s mission to nurture talent and support cultural and educational initiatives. He introduced the CWF leadership team, acknowledging their tireless efforts in building the foundation’s legacy. The entire team was then invited to the stage for the official felicitation ceremony.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards to Aaron. The Canara World Foundation honoured him with a special appreciation award for becoming Canada’s youngest International Master. This prestigious accolade was presented by honourable Kapidhwaja Pratap Singh, who praised Aaron’s dedication and wished him continued success.

Aaron was also recognized with two others major honours:

1. The Kalev Pugi Award, presented by Christina Tao, youth coordinator for the chess federation of Canada. This esteemed award, a hallmark of excellence in Canadian chess, celebrates exceptional contributions to the game and outstanding sportsmanship. Aaron was named the 2024 recipient in recognition of his rapid ascent and remarkable achievements.

2. The International Master Certificate, presented by FM Victor Plotkin, Arbiter Hal Bond, Arbiter Omar Shah, and Annex Chess Club president Salim Belcadi. This certification, awarded by FIDE, solidified Aaron’s place among the world’s elite chess players. Achieving this title at just 12 years old is a testament to his extraordinary talent and determination.

The evening reached its crescendo with a celebratory cake-cutting ceremony. Surrounded by his family, Aaron stood at the center of the festivities as the audience erupted in applause, celebrating not only his achievement but also the collective effort that made it possible.

Aaron then took the stage to deliver a heartfelt speech. With humility and grace, he expressed his gratitude to his parents, coaches, mentors, and the chess community.

The formal proceedings concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Arun Mendes, Aaron’s father. He emphasized that Aaron’s success was the result of collective encouragement, mentorship, and unwavering family support. Arun’s speech resonated deeply with the audience, leaving them with a sense of shared pride and accomplishment.

As the evening transitioned into a celebratory dinner, Ria D’Souza, Aaron’s cousin, led the gathering in a graceful prayer. Guests enjoyed a delicious meal while Aaron remained on stage for a photo session, capturing cherished moments with well-wishers and supporters. The night ended on a high note with music and dance, as the community came together to celebrate not only Aaron’s success but also the spirit of ambition, perseverance, and unity.

The celebrations continued the following week when Aaron was honoured at the grand Republic Day event hosted by Panorama India in collaboration with the Consulate General of India in Toronto. Held at the prestigious Pearson Convention Centre in Brampton on February 2, the event commemorated India’s 76th Republic Day, bringing together the Indian diaspora in Canada in a spirit of patriotism and unity.

During the celebrations, Aaron was felicitated as Canada’s youngest International Master. Honourable Kapidhwaja Pratap Singh presented him with a special award, recognizing his historic accomplishment. The audience responded with thunderous applause, further cementing Aaron’s status as a rising star in the chess world.

Aaron’s journey to the International Master title is a shining example of what can be achieved through passion, hard work, and the support of a loving community. As he sets his sights on the Grandmaster title, the chess world eagerly awaits the next chapter in his inspiring story.
