Madhya Pradesh, Mar 3: Madhya Pradesh Minister Prahlad Patel has defended his controversial statement about people developing a “habit of begging from the government”, clarifying that it was his personal opinion and not a reflection of the BJP’s stance.
Patel, who leads the Panchayat and Rural Development Department, claimed that his remarks were taken out of context. He stated that he made the comment at a community gathering, not a political event, and that leaders from the Congress party were also present.
Patel Denies BJP Involvement, Accuses Congress of Twisting His Words

Speaking to IANS, Patel said, “This was not a BJP event. I was addressing my community members, urging them to uphold self-respect rather than depend on government handouts. I have given this message before and will continue to do so.”
He further accused Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari of distorting his words for political gain.
"The BJP has no connection to my statement, yet the Congress is using it to malign the party. Jitu Patwari should apologize for his baseless allegations," Patel asserted.
Congress Hits Back, Calls BJP “Arrogant and Insensitive”
In response, Jitu Patwari condemned Patel’s remarks, accusing the BJP of betraying public trust.
"Before elections, they make grand promises. When the people demand accountability, they shamelessly call them beggars. The same BJP leaders will soon come begging for votes," Patwari remarked.
The Viral Video That Sparked the Controversy
The controversy erupted after a video surfaced from a recent event in Rajgarh district, where Patel attended the unveiling of a statue of Veerangana Rani Avantibai Lodhi.
In the video, Patel can be heard saying:
"People have developed a habit of begging from the government. Leaders arrive, and they are handed a basket full of petitions. They are garlanded on stage, and a letter is placed in their hands. This is not a good habit. Instead of asking, cultivate the mindset of giving. This will lead to a happier life and help build a cultured society."
He further stated that this "army of beggars" was weakening society and questioned whether any martyr had ever begged for help.
With the video stirring intense debate, the political row over Patel’s comments continues to escalate in Madhya Pradesh.
