Kochi, Mar 3: Eminent nephrologist and senior surgeon Dr George P Abraham was found dead at his farmhouse near Cochin International Airport. The 77-year-old, a pioneer in kidney transplants, reportedly died by suicide, with a note citing health issues as the reason.

Dr Abraham, who performed over 2,500 kidney transplants in his illustrious five-decade career, had recently undergone spine surgery. Despite his health struggles, he was actively consulting patients at a private hospital until Saturday.

According to sources, he visited his farmhouse every Sunday. This time, he was accompanied by his younger brother but later sent him away before taking the extreme step. Locals were shocked to learn about his demise on Monday morning.

A trailblazer in renal transplant surgery, Dr Abraham made history as the third surgeon to harvest a kidney via the laparoscopic method. He also pioneered cadaver transplants and other advanced procedures in Kerala.

Known for his academic brilliance and mentorship, Dr Abraham was widely respected in the medical fraternity. The police have registered a case of unnatural death and initiated a probe.

His funeral will take place this afternoon at St George Jacobite Syrian Church, Cheruthottukunnel.
