Sudanese military plane crash claims at least 46 lives in Omdurman

Omdurman, Feb 26: A devastating military plane crash in Omdurman has left at least 46 people dead and 10 others injured, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday when an Antonov aircraft, departing from Wadi Sayidna airbase north of Omdurman, crashed shortly after takeoff.

According to the Khartoum Media Office, both military personnel and civilians were among those killed. The aircraft crashed into a civilian house in the Karrari district of Omdurman, exacerbating the death toll as people on the ground were also affected. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The crash adds to the growing toll of casualties in Sudan, a nation embroiled in a brutal civil war since 2023. Tensions between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted into full-scale warfare, leading to widespread devastation and atrocities. This ongoing conflict has devastated urban areas, particularly in Darfur, where international human rights organizations have reported war crimes, including mass rape and ethnically targeted killings.

The conflict has escalated over recent months, with the military making significant gains against the RSF in Khartoum and other regions. The RSF, which controls much of Darfur, claimed responsibility for shooting down a military plane on Monday in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur province.

As the conflict continues to ravage Sudan, the recent crash serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing violence and instability in the country.
