Mumbai, Feb 7: Veteran actor Boman Irani believes that age should never be a barrier to fulfilling one’s dreams. Making his directorial debut at 65 with The Mehta Boys, Irani says there is no fixed timeline for chasing one’s passion.
The actor, who first gained recognition with Munnabhai M.B.B.S. in 2003, had a diverse career before stepping into films—working as a waiter, a photographer, and running his mother’s bakery. However, directing a film was always a part of his vision.
“Since childhood, I knew I wanted to be a director,” Irani said. “I don’t understand why people assume an actor should start at 25 and a director at 35. No one else decides my timeline—I do. I’m not saying people should wait until 65 to chase their dreams, but for me, this was the right time. And I don’t think it’s a big deal.”
Known for memorable performances in 3 Idiots, Lage Raho Munnabhai, Khosla Ka Ghosla, Don, Dunki, and Uunchai, Irani emphasized that his passion extends beyond acting—he has always aspired to write, direct, and explore creative storytelling.
“If you don’t have a deep desire, you don’t have a story to tell,” he added. “I don’t see my age as a factor—I just do what I love.”
With The Mehta Boys, Irani delves into the complexities of family dynamics and the emotional nuances of a father-son relationship. He credits filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh for planting the idea of a father-son story, which he then developed alongside Academy Award-winning writer Alexander Dinelaris (Birdman).
Irani’s journey stands as an inspiration, proving that passion and perseverance have no age limit.
