Mangaluru, Jan 26: Gold ornaments worth crores, linked to the robbery at Kotekar Vyavasaya Seva Sahakari Bank's KC Road branch, will be brought to Mangaluru on Sunday, Januray 26. The Mangaluru police team, which apprehended the fourth accused in Tamil Nadu, also recovered 18 kilograms of gold during the operation.
The police arrested Shanmuga Sundaram (65), father of the robbery mastermind Murugendi Thevar, on Friday in Tirunelveli. During interrogation, Sundaram disclosed the location of the hidden gold, which was subsequently seized. After obtaining a transit warrant, the police team began their journey back to Mangaluru on Saturday.
The accused is expected to undergo a medical check-up upon arrival and will be presented at a judge's residence due to Sunday being a court holiday. Police aim to secure his custody for further investigation. The robbery had garnered national attention, especially as it occurred during the chief minister’s visit to Mangaluru. Within a week, the police successfully apprehended three prime suspects and recovered the stolen gold.
The suspects already in custody are undergoing intensive questioning. According to sources, Murugendi Thevar and Yosuva Rajendran have provided critical information about the remaining suspects, leading the police to Mumbai for further action.
The police team, led by city police commissioner Anupam Agarwal, was commended for their swift action in solving the case and recovering the stolen gold. Krishna Shetty of Kotekar Guthu Kelagina Mane and the board of directors of the cooperative society personally congratulated the team.
