Los Angeles, Jan 17: David Lynch, the influential filmmaker behind iconic works such as “Blue Velvet,” “Mulholland Drive,” and the groundbreaking TV series “Twin Peaks,” has passed away at the age of 78.

His family confirmed the news on Thursday, just days before his 79th birthday, in a heartfelt Facebook post.

“There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole,” the statement read. “It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”

The cause of death and location have not been disclosed. Last summer, Lynch revealed that he had been diagnosed with emphysema, which led to his home confinement out of fear of contracting illnesses like coronavirus or even the common cold.

David Lynch first rose to prominence in the 1970s with his surreal debut feature, “Eraserhead,” and continued to leave an indelible mark on cinema with his dark, dreamlike storytelling. His films and television work, including the enigmatic “Twin Peaks” and the unsettling “Blue Velvet,” remain timeless classics.

Colleagues and critics, including Steven Spielberg and Steven Soderbergh, have praised Lynch for his unique artistic vision, which defied convention and inspired countless filmmakers. Soderbergh described him as “one of those filmmakers who was influential but impossible to imitate.”

Throughout his career, Lynch created a distinctive style characterized by unsettling narratives, surreal visuals, and an exploration of the darker aspects of human nature. His films often blurred the lines between reality and the subconscious, offering audiences a haunting, immersive experience.

In addition to filmmaking, Lynch was deeply involved in various creative outlets, including furniture design, painting, and meditation. His David Lynch Foundation promoted Transcendental Meditation as a tool for creative expression and inner peace.

David Lynch’s legacy will endure as a visionary who redefined the boundaries of cinema and inspired generations with his original, thought-provoking art.
