Mangaluru, Sep 30: Two of four young men from the city drowned while swimming in the Phalguni river near the Malavoor bridge on Sunday evening.

Arun (19) and Deekshith (20), residents of Kodical, along with Sumit (20) from Kottara Chowki and Anish (19) from Urwastore, had gone for a swim. Unfortunately, Sumit and Anish were swept away by the river’s current and drowned.

Bajpe police and fire service personnel quickly arrived at the scene and began searching for the missing youths. The search continued late into the night, with diving experts called in to assist. Many locals gathered at the site after hearing about the incident.

Sumit was employed as a mechanic in a garage in Kottara. His father is currently ill and resting at home, while his younger sister is a college student. Anish worked at a soda factory.

Locals from the Malavoor area noted that many youths often swim in the river on holidays, ignoring warnings from local residents. Some even sit on the railway bridge and jump into the river when the police arrive.
