Mangaluru, Aug 13: SJEC AICTE IDEA LAB in association with department of electrical and electronics engineering organized a three-day workshop on ‘Internet of Things’ from August 5 to 7, for the diploma students of electronics & communication engineering, Karnataka polytechnic, Mangaluru at SJEC campus. A total of 29 students registered for the workshop accompanied by a teacher and actively participated during the 3 days’ schedule.
The workshop began with a formal inauguration in the IoT lab. Dr Purushothama Chippar, vice principal and dean of R&D, welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of understanding everyday gadgets. Madhavi Gatty, the convener, delivered the vote of thanks.
The sessions were led by Dr Binu K J, Radhakrishna, Priya Miranda, Jayalaxmi, and Jayashri, while Deekshith, the tech guru, demonstrated various IoT machines and guided participants through hands-on activities.
The workshop focused on the latest advancements in manufacturing processes and the Internet of Things (IoT). It began with an introduction to IoT, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and Node MCU, where participants learned the basics and connected an ultrasonic sensor to a microcontroller to detect objects. They also used the ARDUINO IDE to programme the Node MCU, starting with a simple task like blinking an LED.
On the second day, participants learned how to create basic web elements like headers, buttons, and forms. They then created a simple server in Node MCU to control an LED, combining web development with hardware control. The day ended with an introduction to Adafruit, where participants created a dashboard and connected Node MCU to Adafruit for remote monitoring and control of IoT devices. The third day involved connecting a humidity and temperature sensor to Node MCU and integrating it with data from ultrasonic sensors, connecting everything to the Adafruit platform.
The final session was dedicated to project work, where participants applied their knowledge to complete IoT projects. The workshop, based on the Project-Based Learning (PBL) model, concluded with a valedictory session. Dr Binu K G praised the participants for their enthusiasm, and Suma, a faculty member, thanked the organizers for their support. Participants provided feedback, and Rajesh Belchada, co-convener, announced the top three projects, thanking everyone involved for making the workshop a grand success.
