Mangaluru/Udupi, Mar 26: The price of beans has surged dramatically, attributed to the soaring temperatures and a rise in auspicious occasions in Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi districts. Additionally, other vegetables have become more expensive due to water scarcity.
Previously, beans were priced between Rs 50 to 60 per kg in the local market, but they have now skyrocketed to Rs 100 per kg.
The coastal region primarily sources beans from markets in Bengaluru and Chikkamagaluru. However, the yield has decreased due to water shortages in Bengaluru. With the water situation also dire in coastal areas, residents are forced to rely on vegetables from districts further away.
In contrast, the price of garlic, which experienced a sharp increase, has now plummeted to Rs 200 per kg. Similarly, the cost of lemons has risen in recent days, with a medium-sized lemon fetching between Rs seven to eight, compared to Rs six to seven in the wholesale market.
Meanwhile, ginger is now priced between Rs 160 to 200 per kg, and onions are being sold at Rs 30 per kilo. The rates of other vegetables include tomatoes at Rs 25, ridge gourd at Rs 60 to 70, okra at Rs 40, yam at Rs 80, and green brinjal at Rs 80.
