Mangaluru: Workshop on ‘Construction of Cladograms’ held at St Agnes College

Mangaluru, Sep 16: The department of zoology at St Agnes College (Autonomous) organized a workshop on ‘Construction of Cladograms’ on September 15.

Dr Sumangala Rao, head, department of microbiology and forensic science, Yenapoya College, Mangaluru, was the resource person.

Dr Sumangala spoke about the phylogenetic aspects of the cladograms and explained various features of cladogram that includes clade, cladistics, phylogenetic tree and how to construct cladogram using similar and dissimilar characteristics of the taxa. She emphasised on the importance of cladogram in depicting the ancestral relationship between the various taxa.

Students were later given sets of information to construct a cladogram practically. Students learnt about the various aspects of cladogram construction with the inputs given by the resource person.

Ameetha K, head, department of zoology, Vivid D'Souza and Blairil Vishma D'Cunha were present. As many as 45 final year BSc students took part in this workshop.
