Mangalore, Jul 31: A two-day national-level workshop on Kannada language and research was inaugurated at Sharada Vidyalaya here on Saturday July 30.
The workshop has been organised by the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Bangalore.
The programme was inaugurated with the hoisting of the Kannada flag by district Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura and lighting of the lamp by Dr T V Venkatachala Shastri, retired professor of Mysore University.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Shastri dwelt on the power of poetry and gave examples of Kannada poets like Ranna and Kuvempu whose works have inspired generations of readers. He also emphasized on the need for more research in the field of Kannada literature.
Sharada Educational Trust president Prof M B Puranik lamented that the present generation was moving away from the influence of Kannada language and had failed to recognise richness of its literature.
The two-day programme comprising workshops on five topics related to Kannada language and literature, has eminent professors and researchers from different parts addressing various issues and concerns.
Among those present were former state Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Harikrishna Punaroor, Sharada College principal P N Mayya and others.
