Bengaluru, Jun 4: BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai has strongly condemned the statement of State Animal Husbandry Minister K Venkatesh on why cows cannot be slaughtered when slaughtering of buffaloes and oxen are permitted and said the people revere the cows as gaumata.
The former chief minister said the people revere the cows as gaumata and treat the animal as mother and wondered whether the minister has made the statement to get his portfolio changed or to please the party high command.
He said the minister’s statement on why cows cannot be slaughtered is likely encourage illegal slaughtering of the animals and also smuggling of cows.
Bommai said the State has not brought any new legislation against cow slaughter but was strictly enforcing the legal provisions.
The BJP leader said the minister must carefully think before making public statements or needs to be properly advised.
He pointed out that Mahatma Gandhi had strongly advocated anti-cow slaughter legislation.
