Mangalore, Jul 11: The Mangalore City Corporation, department of public instruction and the department of forests jointly celebrated ‘Vanamahotsava’ at the Nehru Maidan on Monday July 11.
District in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar inaugurated the programme by planting and watering saplings. Later a stage programme was organized at Town Hall. Speaking on the occasion he said that it is decided to plant 2 lac saplings in DK district and 20,000 saplings in MCC limit this year.
He added that MCC will stiffen the rule while allowing the license for constructing new dwellings by making planting of saplings in the premise of every house a mandatory step in the coming days. He also stated that it has been aimed to plant 4 lac ‘kandla’ saplings on the sea shores in twin districts as per the plans of forest department.
Hundreds of saplings were planted as part of the ‘Vanamahotsava’ programme and hundreds of students of different colleges including Roshni Nilaya of the city participated in the event. A skit was performed by the students.
Deputy speaker of the Legislative Assembly N Yogish Bhat presided. Addressing his presidential address he said that a discussion has been held with the engineers to implement modern waste disposal system in city.
DC Dr N S Chennappa Gowda, MCC Commissioner Vijay Prakash, police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, zilla panchayat president K T Shailaja Bhat, Dy mayor Geetha Nayak among others participated.
