Bangalore, Jul 8: Close on the heels of the rich and the mighty in the country going on a buying spree to own latest foreign-made luxury cars, a decision has been taken at the high level meeting headed by the chief secretary, to buy three high security, bullet proof, luxury cars for use by the Chief Minister and the Governor. The decision was taken in view of the need to beef up security for the CM and Governor, taking into account threat perception from naxals and terrorists. The car the government proposes to acquire will be equipped with latest technology which ensures that those inside the car will not suffer the impact of even bombs embedded in the earth. The Chief Minister has given his assent to the decision taken at the meeting held on July 4.
As of now, only the President and Prime Minister use this kind of car. The cars may cost about two crore rupees apiece. The government may decide to buy the cars from either Benz or BMW, which are known for manufacturing these kind of cars. The government has also invited price lists from certain companies. These cars are specially made according to specifications by the companies concerned. The government reportedly is more interested in buying BMW cars.
At present, the Chief Minister has been using bullet proof ambassador cars, which do not have explosives-resistant technology. It is said that the government’s decision to acquire these cars was also taken in view of complaint made by the secretariat to the British premier, David Cameran, to the Indian President, that sub-standard vehicles were provided to the visiting dignitary and his delegation during his visit to the city in July 2010 by the state government. The security staff of the British PM had expressed concerns over security threats caused by cars without enough security features.
The government has decided to provide these cars to the high level dignitaries during their visits to the state.
