Mangalore, Jun 20: Sarita (21), a final year B Com degree student of the University College at Hampankatta here, committed suicide by immolating herself on Sunday June 19. A complaint in this connection was filed at Kadri police station here.
The girl was a resident of Yeyyady Barebail in the city. Reportedly, she was viewing television programmes at home in the company of her elder brother on Sunday afternoon. Her brother noticed tears trickling down from her eyes, but when questioned, she remained evasive. On persistent questioning, she reportedly told her brother that some dust had gone into her eyes.
A little while later, she entered the bathroom, poured kerosene on herself, and kindled a fire. She was immediately rushed to a private hospital here. But her burn injuries were so grave that she could not be saved.
The family is unable to think of any reason for the girl to take to this extreme step. Sarita was a soft-spoken, mild-mannered girl, in the eyes of her family members and the neighbours. Her classmates said she had never confided with them about any problem, except that she was too lean. Unconfirmed reports said that she was annoyed by the behaviour of a bus conductor who used to follow and pester here.
Post mortem was conducted. The body was later handed over to the family by Kadri police.
Sarita is survived by parents and an elder brother. Her father works in a hotel.
