Chikkamagaluru, Oct 5: Harebilalu village of Sringeri taluk in the district is situated on the other side of the Tunga river. During the rainy season, the residents’ lives become miserable as they do not have any way to cross the river. Their appeal for a bridge with the administration has fallen on deaf ears. Hence, they have gone ahead and built a footbridge themselves.

More than 50 families live in Harebilalu village. They have to cross the river to go to schools and earn their livelihood. During the rainy season, they are cut off from the rest of the world for almost three to four months.

The villagers have to travel 14 km to reach the town if a bridge is not available across the Tunga river. As their repeated appeals went unheard, they themselves built a footbridge toiling for months. But they have shown that if the villagers are willing, they can even challenge the administration.
