Panaji, Apr 14: The womenfolk from South Goa’s mining belt have warned to paralyse the mining truck transportation, if state government fails to work out immediate solution for the traffic hazards in this area.
Ekvat Society, a conglomeration of 18 women organizations in the state, has given a deadline of 10 days for the authorities to act. “We will be forced to take on the streets and block the traffic, if our issues are not settled within that time,” Society’s Chairman Suvarna Tendulkar said.
The society has given memorandum to various authorities in the state including Chief Secretary, Transport Director, Police department and even local Dabal-Kirlapal village panchayat.
The women’s organizations, which has over thousand members, has said that the residents of villages living in the stretch between Dabal to Capxem in South Goa’s Sanguem taluka are facing traffic blockages.
“It has been observed that due to High Court order Mining Transport starts at 8.00 am to 1.00 pm and 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm. At 8.00 am mining trucks are allowed on the road the truck driver rush on the road making two parallel lines and also overtaking in between thereby resulting in the congestion,” Tendulkar said.
She said that again at 2.00 pm, similar rush is witnessed at the cost of lives of people who use the same road.
Society has also pointed out that the truck drivers park their vehicles on the roadside, shrinking the width of the road for the usage. “This results in traffic congestion. The entire road is turned into single lane,” Tendulkar said.
The women’s organizations have said that daily bus transport, patients, students, marriages, and even Funerals are affected.
