Mangaluru: Electrical scooters kept for charging go up in flames

Mangaluru, Aug 21: Electrical scooters that were kept for charging went up in flames at Boloor in the city on Saturday.

Two scooters were destroyed completely in the fire, while two others got partially damaged.

Four scooters belonging to Hare Krishna, who sells milk, were kept for charging near the milk booth at Boloor at around 10.30 AM. In the afternoon, the scooters caught fire. Due to the efforts of locals, two scooters were pulled out from the spot and saved from getting burnt completely.

The total estimated loss is Rs 4 lacs. Pandeshwar fire service personnel visited the spot and contained the fire.

A case in this connection is registered in Barke police station.

    Same chemistry in laptops and mobile phone battery but you don't hear of them going up in flames. They are single or fewer in number in a pack. There was a shortage of Cobalt between 2019 and 2021 because of transport issues during Covid, between Congo and China. Some of those batteries deficient in Cobalt will produce sufficient O2 at the anode and ignite lithium. Batteries should have temperature sensors and they should alarm when over heated. Tesla has its batteries water bathed. Atleast have them air cooled. Packing them in dense compartments make them vulnerable to overheating and fire.

    While everyone is asking us to change to electric vehicle there is I feel a risk of fire and explosion with electric vehicles Hence we have to be careful

    I might always sound strange. The comments here are blaming China for this - I do not agree; blame the bad design or poor battery management system (BMS), all of which is designed and developed by the OEM and not battery manufacturer. However, look at the following detail. (a) Most lithium resources around the world are owned directly or indirectly by China including in Bolivia. (b) China is the largest exporter of batteries. Batteries that power iphone generations are completely made in China from scratch. (c) Batteries that power Mahindra, Tata's eVs are from China and Chinese manufacturers provide guarantee for those batteries. (d) Until non-lithium batteries make foray into commercial applications, expect these fire accidents. If charging and BMS are properly designed, you will see less fire, just like iphones on fire is very very rare. Last but not least, our rupee foreign exchange rate was until now sensitive to oil prices. Very soon, Oil will replace batteries and we will forever wonder why we should worry about the dollar rate to measure the health of our economy. We did not produce oil and we did not have foresight to produce Lithium ion batteries. We have the expertise, but we did not have the entrepreneurial risk takers - China had them.

    Indian infrastructure don't support EV vehicle at the movement nor we have proper policy, i can list n number of reasons to avoid EV. we should wait for atleast 15-20 Years.

    Most of EV equipments imported from china and assembled here in India by gujarati businessmen under atmanirbhar scheme. At least made in china has some better quality than so called Make in India!

    Rudolf R.Mumbai ,these batteries made in china mostly inflame always .But not made in approved fabric.There are illegal too ,and sold cheap .They dont hold long ,even Mobiles.

    Rita, today pick up any top brand electronics item in the USA and behind it you will find "Made in China"! Even Volkswagen originating from Germany was caught in a fabricated pollution emission report for which it had to pay millions of dollars in compensation!!! Chinese are much more advanced in technology and much more efficient than us!

    Feeling sad for my country, in guise of some Hindi word the country is held under ransom not to buy Chinese products. Already 90% products are Chinese worldwide . What we now are getting under Feku is the same with name of Made in India.

    The electric supply infrastructure in Karnataka, with outdated technology, is highly susceptible to spontaneous voltage ⚡ fluctuations, polarity changes, and Earthing faults which is highly detrimental to the sensitive lithium batteries in the EVs! Utmost care should be taken to see that the supply points supply very stable supply!

    Many fly-by-night manufacturers have entered this lucrative EV business using dubious shortcuts giving Japanese names to their products to decieve the gullible public; be careful and please go in for reputed brands only if you feel like it's a must! EVs are supposedly not compatible with our tropical climate and the quality of our electricity suppliers!
