Karkala, Jan 27: The second day of the annual feast at St Lawrence Basilica, Attur, witnessed a large turnout of devotees who gathered to participate in the celebrations. The day included three Holy Masses, each offering special prayers for the sick and suffering.

The festival mass was presided over by Msgr Ferdinand Gonsalves, the vicar general of the Udupi Diocese. At noon, Fr Rupesh Madtha, editor of Rakno magazine, led the second mass. The final mass of the day was celebrated by Fr Lawrence D’Souza of the Shimoga Diocese. During all masses, prayers for the ailing were accompanied by the anointing of foreheads and the laying of hands.

The evening featured a Tulu Yakshagana performance by the renowned troupe, depicting the life of St Lawrence. The act, enriched by the participation of noted Tulu artist Dinesh Kodapadavu, captivated the audience.

Fr Alban D’Souza, the Rector of the Shrine, extended his gratitude to the thousands of devotees who attended and to the 200 volunteers assisting in various capacities. He also acknowledged the police force present to ensure safety and order.

Many devotees undertook long journeys on foot as part of their vows to St Lawrence. They offered prayers, lit candles, and visited the nearby pond, which is considered sacred. Throughout the day, over 20 priests were available for confessions, allowing the faithful to receive the sacrament of reconciliation.

On Tuesday, January 28 the feast will culminate with 10 masses, including the main mass in Kannada at 5:30 PM, led by Dr Lawrence Mukkuzhy, Bishop of Belthangady. The final mass is scheduled for 10 PM.
