Mangalore, Apr 6: Obesity is a chronic and progressive disease which can affect multiple organs of the body and every year number of people die prematurely due to obesity related diseases such as Diabetes, High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) Sleep Apnoea, and Gout etc. Treating Obesity requires multidisciplinary approach.

A 45 year old male patient, a resident of Coimbatore(T.N) with obesity, weighing about 106 kgs, approached Dr. Roshan Shetty, a Consultant Surgical Gastroenterologist and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon and H.O.D of Minimal Access Surgery and Surgical Gastroenterology, City Hospital Mangalore and he complained about his overweight and other obesity related complications and expressed his desire to be relieved from these problems and requested for immediate treatment as all earlier treatments failed.
On detailed BMI (Body Mass Index) examination (Height and Weight Comparison) Dr. Shetty found that the patient is obese and is ailing from Diabetes, Hypertension, and Gout which required Bariatric Surgery (Obesity Surgery). After evaluation the patient was subjected for Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy which lasted for 2 ½ hours duration. Anaesthalogist Dr. Kishan Shetty, General Surgeon Dr. Bhaskar Shetty and Dr. Senthil assisted in the surgery which was successful.
The patient responded to the surgery and recovered very speedily and is discharged from the Hospital very recently and is leading a very normal and happy life at Coimbatore, keeping in touch with the doctor frequently over phone. In the mean time he has lost 36 kgs weight and has discontinued all medications.
This is a very rare and unique successful obesity surgery performed in Mangalore City.
