New Delhi, Apr 3 (IANS): The Delhi government Sunday announced cash rewards of Rs.2 crore for Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rs.1 crore each for the four Delhi players in the World Cup winning squad -- Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Ashish Nehra and Virat Kohli.
"Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has announced reward of Rs.2 crore for captain M.S. Dhoni, and Rs.1 crore each for Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Ashish Nehra, and Virat Kohli," astatement from the government said:
Gambhir was the highest run getter in India's six wicket victory over Sri Lanka Saturday with his 97. Then, the 83-run stand between Gambhir and Kohli for the third wicket was India's highest in a World Cup final.
"The rewards have been announced in view of their outstanding performance in the entire World Cup tournament," the statement said.
Dikshit had earlier said in her message to the team: "Our players have displayed their outstanding performance and supremacy in the game. This is a historic moment after 28 years."
"Delhiites should join all countrymen in celebrating this moment of great joy and happiness," she added.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already announced a Rs.1 crore award for each member of the victorious Indian squad.
