Kundapur, Apr 2: A respected veteran of cooperative movement, dignitary and social worker, Karikatta Mahabala Shetty (87), breathed his last at a farewell function he had presided over, on Friday April 1 evening.
Shetty, who had functioned as president and director of Byndoor Agricultural Service Cooperative Bank, had presided over a farewell function organized for a retiring employee on Friday. Due to cardiac arrest, he collapsed on the spot and lost his life. He is survived by wife, daughter, and two sons.
Shetty, belonging to a prestigious lineage, was a large scale agriculturist. Besides being a social worker, he had served as president of Byndoor municipality twice. He also had headed various organizations like Buntara Sangha, Kalavadi Marikamba Temple Renovation Committee etc.
At the farewell function organized for Lawrence Fernandes, Shetty suffered cardiac arrest at the beginning of the programme. His body was later moved to his home. Various leaders including former managing trustees of Kollur Goddess Mookambika temple, B M Sukumar Shetty and Krishnarpasad Adyantaya, former MLA, K Gopal Poojary, chairman of South Canara District Cooperative Central Bank, M N Rajendra Kumar, Byndoor MLA, Lakshminarayan, and others rushed to his home to pay their last respects.
