Mangalore, Mar 8: Two under-trials, who were being taken by the police escort from Chikmagalur to Kasargod for presenting them in a court in Hosadurg as per an order, succeeded in hoodwinking their escorts and running away from the KSRTC bus stand here on Sunday. Both of them were facing charges relating to a number of thefts, and were lodged in the district jail at Chikmagalur. One of them was later taken into custody from Anantapur near Kumble on Monday March 7.

The under-trials, who deceived the policemen, have been identified as Riaz and Mohammed Rafique, both from Kasargod. Out of them, Riaz was arrested again on Monday.

It is learnt that when the policemen brought the two alleged thieves to KSRTC bus stand here, and were waiting for their bus to Kasargod, both of them requested for permission to visit the toilet. The policemen removed their handcuffs. The under-trials then pushed away the policemen and made good their escape. Riaz, who was injured while fleeing, has now been admitted into a hospital in Kasargod. Policemen from Kerala and Karnataka visited the spot to assess the situation. Chikmagalur police personnel have filed a complaint in this respect in Barke police station here.
