Puttur, Mar 7: Jacobite Syrian Church Bishop, Polycorpus Mar Geeverghese (78), breathed his last due to cardiac arrest in a hospital in Iritty, Kannur, in Kerala, on the night of Sunday March 6.
Bishop Geeverghese, who was the director of Honnavar Mission, was also the patron and president of The Evangelist Association of the East.
He had set up Syrian churches in various places of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikmagalur, Hassan, Shimoga, and north Kerala districts. He always worked for helping the villagers to come up in life. About 46 churches, three high schools, two junior colleges, and over 20 primary schools were started by him in Karnaaka and Kerala.
The Bishop, who was a native of Chennattila in Kerala, worked mostly in Karnataka. After securing his degree, he got higher education in Syrian language. He had good hold over a number of other languages including Tulu, Konkani, Kannada, English and Hindi.
