Mangalore: International Status for Airport Only After Runway Extension – Minister

Mangalore, Mar 5: Union civil aviation minister, Vayalar Ravi, has clarified that the local airport will be accorded international status, only after the runway is extended. He was reacting after receiving a memorandum submitted to him by a delegation of the district youth Congress, led by All India Congress Committee member, P V Mohan, to draw the minister’s attention to the development initiatives required to be undertaken by the union government in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.

The delegation was on a week’s visit to New Delhi. The minister told the delegation that the centre would be able to give international status to Mangalore airport, only after its runway is extended from the current 8,000 ft, to 9,000 ft. The delegation comprised district youth Congress president, Arun Coelho, general secretary, Dennis D’Silva, district Congress secretary, Sudhir, leaders, Jalil Karopady, Siddiq Pare, Tejaswiraj, Srihari and Mohan Mendon.

    All probablities are to receive International status to Kannur Airport even before its commissioning. For Mangalore, the politicians and front runners are not doiing much and therefore, I doubt we ever can receive this status, for at least 5 years from now.
