Bengaluru: Alliance University hosts inter-university sports meet 'Athlos'

Bengaluru, Apr 28: Alliance University hosted a four-day inter-university sports meet 'Athlos', which consisted of the participation of over 40 universities and institutions, with more than 1500 students playing six sports at theUniversity Central Campus in Anekal, Bengaluru.

The meet began with an inaugural event which had Dr Ashish Kumar Ballal, a renowned Hockey player as the chief guest. Dr Ballal has captained the Indian Hockey team for 275 international matches and is Gold Medallist in Asian Games 1998, Silver Medallist in Asian games 1994, Arjuna Awardee 1997 and Ekalavya Awardee by Govt of Karnataka 2000. KK Poonacha, a renowned coach in the field of hockey, was the guest of honour. Poonacha is a commissioned officer in the Indian Army and winner of KOA-2015 from Karnataka Olympic Association.

Dr Punith Cariappa, pro vice-chancellor, Student Administration and Affairs, welcomed the participants and while wishing them good luck, emphasized on the spirit of fun, teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership. She also stated that participants should not let a win get to their headsor a loss to their hearts.

Abhay G Chebbi, pro-chancellor, Alliance University extended his appreciation to the Department of Student Support Services for organizing the inter-university sports fest, while welcoming participating institutions, highlighting that all safety protocols were adhered to in organizing the event. Abhay emphasized on the importance of holistic development of the youth and how sport plays a critical role in shaping physical agility and mental dexterity. He emphasized that all participants must imbibe true sportsmanship that includes thorough preparedness to succeed, a grit to perform to the best of abilities, and valuing opponents to better one's own game. Abhay highlighted how Alliance University has been a nurturing ground for sporting talent and discussed about the future plans of the University to strengthen its existing sport-based infrastructure. He lauded the efforts of both state and central governments in the country to develop and enhance investments in sports infrastructure and encouraged students to pursue their passion along with grooming themselves academically to become strong leaders of the future.

The vice-chancellor Dr Anubha Singh in her address welcomed many hundreds of men and women, who congregated on a crisp Spring morning on the sprawling campus of the University, as competitive teams, geared up in their sports attire, ready to go blazing in a four-day Inter-University Sports meet - ATHLOS hosted by Alliance University. Welcoming all the players to the folds of Alliance ATHLOS community, Dr Anubha invited them to share a common identity, common bond of camaraderie and make the entire experience a happier, more rewarding one. Addressing all the captains of various teams, she said– some men and women are born to captain and highlighted that confidence let you relax, and confidence let you flourish.

The chief guest for the event, Dr Ashish K Ballal, enthusiasticallyaddressed the students and empowered them to play the games with sheer commitment and heightened spirits.Mr. KK Poonacha, the Guest of Honor, addressed the students asking them to train themselves as much as possible as more practice results in more victories.

The four-day extravagant event saw massive participation from students of many universities and institutions for sports and cultural activities that were organized as part of the event. The lush green campus of Alliance University with large sports grounds and facilities had participants battle it out in matches of Table Tennis, Basketball, Volleyball, Football, Cricket and Kabaddi. The winners of the six sporting events would take home prize money worth rupees two lakhs and carry back enthralling memories of their visit to Alliance University.
