Iran, Saudi Arabia discuss regional tensions and cybersecurity amid escalating crises

Tehran, Apr 28: Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud spoke over the phone on Monday to discuss bilateral relations and mounting tensions in West Asia.

During the conversation, Araghchi condemned what he called Israel’s "ongoing crimes" in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon, blaming the "escalating instability" in the region on Israel’s actions. He urged for "global mobilization" to halt what he described as "ongoing genocide," according to a statement shared by Iran’s Foreign Ministry on social media platform X.

Araghchi also updated his Saudi counterpart on the progress of Iran's indirect negotiations with the United States, the statement noted.

Faisal bin Farhan extended Saudi Arabia's condolences following the recent deadly port explosion in southern Iran, expressing sympathy to the victims' families and wishing a swift recovery for the injured, reported Xinhua News Agency.

A separate statement from the Saudi Foreign Ministry confirmed that the two sides reviewed bilateral ties, the Iran-US dialogue, and other shared concerns during their exchange.

Meanwhile, Tehran reported on Monday that it had successfully foiled a major cyberattack targeting national infrastructure.

Behzad Akbari, Iranian Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Technology, revealed on X that "one of the extensive and complicated cyberattacks" had been detected and countered through immediate preventive measures, without providing further details about the origin or nature of the attack.

Iran has been the target of multiple cyberattacks in recent years. In 2021, a cyberattack disrupted fueling systems at gas stations nationwide. In subsequent incidents, Iran thwarted attacks on entities like Mahan Airlines and the Central Bank of Iran. Most recently, in December 2023, service disruptions at fuel stations were attributed by Israeli media to an Israel-linked hacker group known as "Predatory Sparrow" (Gonjeshke Darande).
