Udupi, Feb 11: Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL), which has its coal-based thermal power plant at Nandikoor near Padubidri, has always been in one controversy or the other. Of late, residents of nearby villages have taken up cudgels against the project for air, water, and ground pollution.
However, it cannot be denied that UPCL, the first phase of which has become fully operational, has ensured that the twin-districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada have escaped from frequent power cuts but for repairs, frequent damages to insulators, and maintenance works. As per an agreement, the energy department of the state has to pay penalty to UPCL if there is problem with the lines carrying power outside the plant and in the grid line. Although it was proposed to draw a high tension cable via the Western Ghats to Hassan, the plan has been facing hurdles from the union environment ministry, as it passes through thick forests.
The state therefore, is presently compelled to draw power to the state grid through its line through Kemaru village. 500 mw of power, which UPCL now produces, is being diverted to the coastal districts presently, as a result of which, power cuts have become very rare. However, once the proposed power line through the Western Ghats gets environmental clearance, most of the power generated by UPCL, including about 600 mw of power its second unit is expected to generate, will flow directly to Bangalore.
